Q: How do you get to the Bighorn?
A: The Bighorn River is located approximately 90 miles southeast of Billings, Montana on the Crow Indian reservation.
Many people fly into Billings, Montana or Sheridan, Wyoming and rent a car! There is a private shuttle service based in Ft. Smith that uses a large van.
To drive to Ft. Smith, take Interstate 90 from Billings for 42 miles east to Exit 495 at Hardin, Montana then go 42 miles southwest on Highway 313 thru the settlement of St. Xavier to Ft. Smith. From Sheridan, drive north on Interstate 90 to Lodge Grass then west to near St. Xavier and on to Ft. Smith.
There is a public airstrip on the north side of the Afterbay near Ft. Smith that private planes can use.
The town of Ft. Smith is the center of all the activity on the river. Fort Smith has a post office, general store - gas station, fly shops and one restaurant.
