Side Channel Restoration Work Begins!

Updated: Dec 11, 2023

The Bighorn River Alliance is on the ground restoring 5 Bighorn Side Channels between the Three Mile Access site and the St. Xavier Bridge. Restoration of these channels will add 2.35 miles of complex habitat back to the River and its Wild Trout, bringing the total number of side channels restored by BHRA since 2021, to seven! This work is made possible through funding received through the MFWP Future Fisheries Improvement Program, the USFWS Great Plains Fish Habitat Program and the BHRA Membership.

Channels being restored will occur in the below sequence. Click on the name of a channel to take a quick flight over what they looked like before restoration!

  1. Across from Turtle Rock - Before | After

  2. Cline's Channel - Before | After

  3. Above Rattlesnake Island - Before | After

  4. St. Xavier Bridge - Before | After

  5. African Queen - Before | After

Locations and design plans for each channel are available in the 2023 Side Channel Reactivation Project document (below). We look forward to keeping you updated on this blog and our social media channels as work progresses!
